The Special Operations Division comprises several specialty units within the police department. The division is composed of motivated police officers who have completed advanced training to bring a specific skill set and equipment to their assigned duties and respond to general calls for service.
Our Traffic Unit is responsible for investigating traffic accidents, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting traffic safety within the Town of Summerville. The Unit is equipped with FARO equipment to conduct precise accident reconstruction.
Our Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is responsible for assisting those experiencing mental health distress. This team is one of few in the state and has undergone training with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). CIT works alongside Clinicians from the Dorchester County Mental Health and has an embedded clinician on the team. All members are also Hostage Negotiators.
Our Special Enforcement Team (SET) comprises proactive officers that saturate high crime areas designated by our Crime Analysis Unit or information obtained from our Narcotics Unit. SET has won National Interdiction Team awards in 2021 and 2022 for seizing the most guns amongst other agencies in the country.
Team 6 is our "Hospitality Team," focusing on reducing crimes in business and town attraction areas. This team provides visual deterrence by conducting patrols in various businesses, conducts shoplifting investigations, and works with local organizations to assist the Homeless in obtaining resources or shelters. Team 6 also conducts enforcement of underage alcohol purchases with SLED and Dorchester County Drug and Alcohol.
Our Warrants Unit serves warrants and subpoenas issued by the Summerville Municipal Court. They also serve the court on city court days by providing a court bailiff and a transport officer. The Warrants Division is also responsible for the extradition of wanted individuals who are held in other jurisdictions.
