1. What is annexation?

Annexation is the process of bringing parcels of land from unincorporated areas of the county into the service area and jurisdiction of a town. It does not affect ownership of your property, but often provides additional public services.

3. Are there any additional costs to being in the Town limits?

While residing or doing business in the Town of Summerville may have some costs, these costs may be offset, in part, by the elimination of county and/or special purpose or private service fees, as well as lower in-town rates. Our Planning and Economic Development Department can provide you a cost comparison at your request.

5. Is it possible for my entire neighborhood to annex into the Town?

Yes. If multiple property owners are interested in incorporating into the Town of Summerville, SC State Law Title 5, “Municipal Corporations,” offers three different methods for requesting annexation:

• Petition of 100% of property owners
• Petition of 75% of property owners having title to 75% of total assessed value of property in an area to be annexed
• Petition of 25% of qualified electors in area to be annexed for an election

6. Am I eligible for annexation?

Annexation eligibility is determined by the location of property in connection with the existing Town of Summerville limits. Eligibility requirements are governed by SC State Law Title 5, “Municipal Corporations.”

To annex into the Town of Summerville, property must be:

1. Contiguous or “touching” the Town of Summerville limits
2. Approved by the Town Council
