John O’Meara was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2021. Deputy Chief O’Meara strives to lead SPD in a fashion that focuses on cultivating a positive working environment through servant leadership. The culture created breeds professionalism, dedication to the community, and better service for the citizens we serve.
John O'Meara began to join the ranks of the Summerville Police Department in 2002 after four years at another local department. During O’Meara’s tenure with our department, he has served in various assignments and duties. The positions include Criminal Investigations Division Commander, Administrative Division Commander, Special Operations Division Commander, Traffic Division Commander, Filed Training Manager, Patrol Sergeant, Corporal, and Patrolman First Class.
Deputy Chief O’Meara previously served as the SPD Honor Guard Commander, a unit that is highly respected in the field as they are often called upon to conduct line-of-duty death funerals for agencies across the state. He was integral in the creation of the Special Enforcement Team, Office of Professional Standards, Crisis Intervention Team, and Team Six. He has also previously served as the Department’s webmaster and helped stand up SPD’s Social Media presence. Deputy Chief O’Meara served as the first president of the Summerville – Dorchester Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #48 and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and a graduate of the FBINA Carolina Command College.
Deputy Chief John O'Meara takes pride in his family, is a dog lover, plays guitar, and is fluent in Spanish. He is an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
