Captain Timothy Jones commands the Special Operations Division, which includes the Traffic Unit, Selective Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Team 6, Crisis Intervention Team, K9 teams, Warrants, and the Duty Officer. Tim was promoted to the rank of Captain in April 2021.
Tim began his law enforcement career by joining the Summerville Police Department’s Reserve Officer program in 1997. Captain Jones became a full-time member of the Summerville Police Department in 1999. During Tim’s tenure with our department, he has served in various assignments and duties, including being a police K9 handler for nearly ten years. For several years, Capt. Jones was the K9 Unit supervisor and assisted in the training of dogs and new handlers. A member of the Emergency Services Unit (SWAT), and the designated marksmen for sixteen years, police motorcycle officer, patrol supervisor, and watch commander. Capt. Jones maintains several certifications for the department, including South Carolina Specific Skills Instructor, field training officer, firearms instructor, patrol rifle/select fire instructor, and police motorcycle instructor. Jones has attended training for Midlevel Management, EPIC pipeline, and HIDTA training in criminal interdiction and trends including interview and interrogation roadside techniques. Additionally, Captain Jones attended the FBI’s Carolina Command College in 2009.
Awards and Recognition
Tim has been recognized by the Summerville Elk’s Lodge for Officer of the Year, the Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge 3, with an award of Meritorious Service. Capt. Jones was awarded the Clifford A. Moyer Award from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. The National Criminal Enforcement Association awarded Capt. Jones with the Award of Valor. Capt. Jones has been the Summerville Police Department’s Officer of the Year. In 2013, Capt. Jones and his K-9 partner, Ronin, were awarded the K9 Legacy by the National Criminal Enforcement Association.
Capt. Jones is married to his high school sweetheart, and they have two beautiful children and one grandchild. Capt. Jones still has his roots in K9, and he even has his own Belgium Malinois. They love spending their time with friends and family, on the water, or riding motorcycles.
